The castles of West Attica: Aegosthena, Eleutherai and the Oinoi tower

Three fortifications, which are part of the defense network along the western edge of the Attica border line, the fortress of Aegosthena, the fortress of Eleutherai and the Oinoi tower, are presented on this essay. The aim is to investigate the various promotion strategies that have already been implemented or are likely to be applied in these three cases. First, a comparative study of the three sites is attempted on the basis of the archaeological evidence, the identification of the similarities and differences that refer to the geographical location, the architectural form and their function in the antiquity. Secondly, the conservation status of the monuments and the restorations that are already carried out are evaluated on the basis of the observance of the basic principles of conservation. The essay highlights the need to protect these monuments through a target plan and makes useful suggestions for the restoration, the cultural and educational exploitation of fortifications.
