Summary:
This study focuses on investigating the effectiveness of a social and emotional learning program in a 6th grade student of elementary school. Fundamental research issues were the formation of a positive self-perception, the strengthening of self-esteem and the development of socio-emotional skills. At the same time, the study aims to examine the reduction of certain undesirable behaviors of the student, based on a quasi-experimental single-subject design with alternating phases of application and withdrawal of the intervention, which was carried out in 20 sessions. The means of data collection was systematic observation and recording of dysfunctional behaviors as well as questionnaires that measured psychosocial adjustment, self-concept/self-esteem and behavioral difficulties during initial and final assessment. The analysis and interpretation of the results showed an increase in participants' self-perception of academic ability and peer relations after the end of the psycho-educational program. In addition, there has been an increase in self-esteem and the adoption of more socio-emotional skills, leading to an improvement in the student's wider psychosocial competence. Finally, there was a significant reduction in the frequency of observed undesirable target behaviors during the intervention period. This research study confirms the findings of various surveys on the benefits of social and emotional education programs, both at preventive and interventional level.
