The Chronicle of the Siege and the Fall of Negroponte by the Ottomans(1470) on the basis of Italian Sources.
Summary:
There was no accidental phrase by J.J Norwich describing Negroponte as "the brightest gem in the imperial crown of Venice". The stigma of the island in a wider context of economic and commercial enforcement-sovereignty was clear and hence attracted the sovereign powers of the era when each of them claimed the role of the ruler in an environment of favorable alliances or even warfare. In such an environment where competition was constantly rising, the warfare of the first Venetian-Ottoman war was inevitable.
It is not attempted, however, to replicate events that could be regarded as a literary approach but a historical, as far as possible, assessment of the political scene, diplomatic maneuvers and actions of both sides that led to the concrete result namely to the siege and the fall the most important Venetian fortress in the West and the rest of the Venetian possessions that saw their future ominous before the Ottoman expansionism.
In the chronicle, based on published material in the Italian language and translated into Greek, is rendered the context of the temporal succession of events, which is enriched by the information of the chroniclers of the time that complement each other in details adding vitality to narration.
