Vocabulary teaching of modern Greek as a second language: critical retrospection, synthesis and application of Gass's model in vocabulary acquisition
Summary:
This paper reports on the role of vocabulary in teaching Greek as a second/foreign language based on Gass’s integrated model of SLA. In order to examine the feasibility and effectiveness of the tested model, an educational scenario was designed and was used as the organizational basis of a series of exploratory interviews. The participants were five tutors of the School of Modern Greek language of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The interview’s results confirm both the feasibility and the effectiveness of the model in vocabulary learning and retention, with the higher level of competency being on the front burner. It is hoped that the observations in this paper will constitute a body of essential empirical evidence together with theoretical insights into the vital areas of vocabulary’s acquisition research.
