Summary:
In children with cystic fibrosis:
1. In recent infection with P. aeruginosa many strains are not expressing the effector proteins of Type III secretion system, and those who express these proteins, the secretion of ExoU is rare.
2. There was no correlation between type III secretion and clinical symptoms or persistance of the strain.
3. First infection with P. aeruginosa in infancy was not associated with worse outcomes as far as growth, lung function or chest CT scan findings at age 7 years are concerned.
4. Early infections with the other bacteria studied were not associated with with worse outcomes as far as growth, lung function or chest CT scan findings at age 7 years are concerned.
5. P. αeruginosa infection in older children was not associated with lower ΒΜΙ z-score, body composition indices , bone density or lung function.
