The political men of Athens and the decrees they proposed since the death of Alexander the Great until the end of the Chremonidean war
Summary:
The main purpose of this postgraduate dissertation is the presentation of the athenian history based on the decrees that the Athenians statesmen proposed in the Assembly or in the Boule with a time offset the death of Alexander the Great until the end of the Chremonidean war in 261B.C. The nature of the vast majority of the decrees that are analyzed is epigraphical and a necessary condition to integrate the decrees in this study is the display or even the safe restoration of the name of the proposer on the stone. Between the 45 proposers that are presented there are, on the one hand, some well known statesmen, such as Demades and Stratokles, and, on the other hand, individuals who are not known by literary or other testimonies, making their political and ideological positioning problematic. Furthermore, the content of some decrees may be characterized as “indifferent” because it can simply regulate the typical everyday life of the city. However, the listing of all resolutions from the Assembly or the Boule, as long as the name of the proposer is restored, gives a complete picture of Athens. The Assembly was not just a body to decide about important issues. It was the body of all the decisions that Athens had to take in military, diplomatic, religious, political and social level. Thus, with the disclosure of all resolutions that retain the name of the proposer the image of the Athens is given in a more refined way since the birth of the Hellenistic world until the subjection to Antigonos Gonatas. Finally, it is of particular interest the way that the Athenian diplomacy is maneuvering in the framework of benevolence and return, as well as the political conversion or not, of the Athenian statesmen, depending on who Macedonian king had under his suzerainty Athens since the disputes between the Diadochi had a direct impact on the formerly leading city – state.
