Summary:
In the past years, as part of the effort to raise environmental consciousness at a time of having to address the consequences of human intervention in nature more frequently than ever, Environmental Education (EE) has found a place at all education levels. By this token, the Hellenic Air Force Non-Commissioned Officers’ Academy (NCOA) has incorporated the “Pollution control & environmental protection” course in its curriculum.
In Chapter 1 of this Thesis, there is a description of the Academy’s education outline mostly focusing on its academic part and on this particular course.
In Chapter 2, there is a literature review of the historical background of EE, its contribution and the problems to its delivery. There are also references to the theoretical background of this Thesis by elaborating on the learning theories in Environmental Science and on the modern teaching methods & techniques for EE.
In Chapter 3, there is reference to the design and methodology of the research that was conducted in order to bring out and make a record of the alternative conceptions of the Academy’s first-year students on issues relating to the protection of the environment along with their associated interests.
In Chapter 4, the results of this research and the corresponding conclusions are analyzed, as derived by using specific software for statistical calculations.
Finally, in Chapter 5, based on these conclusions, lesson plans are created by using modern approaches to teaching like the cognitive conflict instructional strategy and teaching-with-analogies models under the scope of students’ conceptual change.
