Summary:
In this particular research, the main goal is to explore Roma parents’ notions, who live at Chalandri, at the Nomismatokopio camp. This exploration is achieved through qualitative research. Through the analysis of the data, the reasons that cause this population to drop out of school earlier than they should, are defined, and suggestions for reducing or even eliminating this phenomenon are presented.
In the first chapter, an attempt is made to fully determine the phenomenon of early school abandonment and to research in depth the reasons that cause it. Initially, the role of the family, the school, the social exclusion that these students have to face and the social context that they live in are analyzed. In the last section of the chapter ideas and suggestions are introduced, which could be applied so for this phenomenon to possibly be predicted in some occasions and be dealt with as successfully as possible.
In the second chapter, the focus is shifted on understanding and delving in depth into the characteristics of the Roma culture, which will be analyzed through the prism of Roma people’s history, civilization and language. In order to acquire as much information as possible for this particular group of people, their way of life, their living conditions, their occupational activities as well as the way their younger members’ socialization is achieved are thoroughly examined.
In the third chapter, Roma people’s educational culture is described and the difficulties of their adjustment and incorporation to the educational system are illustrated with great detail. A special reference is made to the regard the State has shown to Rome people’s education.
In the fourth, fifth and sixth chapter, the quantitative research that was done is presented in order to investigate the notions of Roma parents regarding the phenomenon of school dropout in their community. The notions that are presented, have significant value, as this phenomenon is quite frequent in this particular cultural group and it is a common matter of discussion. Initially, the research methodology that was followed, the research questions, the research design, the sample description, the research tools (semi-formed interviews), the conditions in which this research took place and the ethics of this study are described. The presentation of the data, as they were excerpted by the interviews, the analysis and the interpretation of them based on specific axis are subsequent. The axis was designed based on the criterion of ranking the answers into categories. Finally, suggestions are offered for the reduction of the phenomenon of the school dropout in the Roma community.
