Attitudes of students of pedagogical faculties and teachers toward Syrians, Iraqis and Afghan immigrants / refugees: Ethnic minority threat perception and Ethnic minority political exclusionism
Summary:
Over the last few years, Europe has received the biggest migratory flow the world community is facing since World War II. With the unprecedented reinforcement of refugee flows to the borders of the European Union, Greece is emerging as a predominantly prime location for immigrants and refugees. The aim of this study is to investigate the attitudes of Greek students of pedagogical faculties and Greek teachers towards the nowadays flows of Syrians, Afghans, Iraqi immigrants and refugees in relation to the Ethnic minority threat perception and the Ethnic minority political exclusion. The sample consists of 172 individuals from the Attica region, 92 of which are students of pedagogical faculties and 80 are teachers, in public schools of primary and secondary education. The Neumann & Sram "Personality and Attitudes" questionnaire was used to collect the data for the survey, which was adapted in Greek, and from which the sub-scales of “Attitude toward Syrian, Iraqui and Afghan refugees and immigrants”, the “Ethnic minority threat perception” and the “Ethnic minority political exclusion” were studied. The results showed that attitudes towards immigrants and refugees are highly correlated to the ethnic minority threat perception and ethnic minority political exclusionism, in the samples of both students and teachers. Also, the degree of religiousness seems to be correlated to the level of ethnic minority political exclusionism.
