Investigation of the relationship between parental rearing and achievement strategies and causal attributions among adolescents in school
Summary:
The aim of the study was to investigate the strategies that adolescents apply in order to achieve their academic goals, to further understand their causal attributions for success and failure at school, and to examine the connection of these aspects to the perceived parental practices. The study sample consisted of 206 students, who attended two high schools of Thiva. The participants were presented with: a demographic questionnaire, the “Strategy and Attribution Questionnaire, SAQ-O: Revised” (Nurmi & Sattin, 1998) and the questionnaire “My memories of upbringing, EMBU-C: Revised questionnaire for children” (Perris, Jacobsson, Linndström, Knorring και Perris, 1980). According to the results, task-irrelevant behavior is positively correlated with parental rejection and negatively correlated with parental emotional warmth. Adolescents’ failure expectation was negatively correlated with both parents’ emotional warmth and positively associated to maternal rejection and anxious rearing from both parents. Moreover, the domain specifity of adolescents’ failure trap behaviors was positively correlated with the rejection from both parents and the anxious rearing on the mother’s part and negatively correlated with the paternal emotional warmth. Additionally, some demographic dimensions seemed to be statistically significant for some aspects of perceived parental practices and the students’ achievement strategies.
