School nurse and selection of electronic health record
Summary:
SUMMARY
Given the vast growth of health informatics and computer sciences in heath care the last decade, the question remains in what forms this development can be exploited. The Electronic Health Record has contributed greatly in data management and information processing, improving health care in health care units worldwide. Despite its numerous advantages the implementation of EHR is still limited, due to worries concerning privacy and confidentiality as well as cost-efficacy. The aim of this paper is to explore the proper way to implement the EHR in the school environment and the role of the school nurse to this achievement. The paper presents a proposal regarding an automated and interoperate electronic school health record, whose main conductor is the school nurse and the contents of which refer to the students’ health condition under a holistic health care view. The record communicates with the student record, connecting the health condition to school performance and absence and also provides information on previous events. The research method focused on searching through PubMed, Scopus, IEEE Xplore using the key words “EHR”, “EMR” and “schools”, “school nursing” and “informational system” and “schools”. As a secondary source the official websites of NASN, Ministry of Education, Research and Religion and National Printing House were also viewed. The screening process was originally based on the title, further exclusion criteria were white papers, papers not published in English and papers with publication date older than 17 years. For the implementation in the school environment the SNAP software is suggested.UML diagrams were used for the presentation of the system. In conclusion, the implementation of an Electronic Health Record is anticipated to produce a variety of positive outcomes regarding health care.
