FROM THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE TO THE PERSECUTIONS OF PAGANS, The religious policy of the roman state during the 4th and the first decades of the 5th century
Summary:
The emergence of Christianity in the Roman Empire was marked by the persecution of Christians. The legal position of the latter in the first three centuries was unclear. However, persecution against Christians began as early as the Apostolic era and ended at the beginning of the 4th century.
The cessation of persecutions and the legalization of Christianity as a religio licita came, in principle, from Galerius' Decree of the religious tolerance, on 30 April 311.
Until the third decade, there was still a distinction between the personal beliefs of the emperors and their action as rulers both against Pagans and Christians.
However, the religious policy of the 4th and the first decades of the 5th century reveals the efforts of the emperors to gradually suppress the pagan worship and the prevalence of Christianity as an official religion of the Empire, which occurred on Theodosius I.
The foundation of the emperors from Constantine the Great and then was the unbroken continuation of the unified statehood of imperium romanum. This empire had not formally eliminated its physiognomy under the form of imperium christianum.
