Summary:
The present thesis discusses the study of the filet lace technique, a form of decorating a fine net, on the island of Tinos. The research project was undertaken during the “Folklore and Cultural Studies” master’s degree at the Department of Primary Education of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, under the guidance of assistant professor Dr. Rea Kakampoura.
The thesis attempts to analyze not only the technological aspects of this lace but also the social impact on the lives of the lace makers. At the same time, it follows the filet lace throughout the 20th century; a period that brought radical changes to all kinds of crafts in regard to small domestic production, as well as in the way of life generally.
The first part of this study consists of an introduction to Greek folk arts and crafts and the various genres of embroidery. A short reference to Tinian history follows and then the introduction concludes with a description of the methodology that has been used during research (fieldwork with observation, interviews, photo shooting, bibliographical research).
The following part is the main study, which is dedicated to filet lace exclusively and examines the different names of this lace around the world, its origin, the technique itself (threads and tools, frames, weaving of the knotted net, stitches, embroidery, mistakes and their correction, aftercare of the finished lace), patterns and themes, uses of the lace (at home, in church, as part of one’s dowry), apprenticeships in the trade, the financial relationships between makers and buyers, and finally, the contribution of The Tinian Women’s Association to the spread of this technique.
In the last chapter, the filet lace trade is discussed in relation to today’s turn towards tradition and the preference for handmade items. Sources of information and an annotated bibliography verify the study which also concludes a large appendix of embroidered filet laces and patterns.
