Attitudes of Greek Adolescents towards Immigrants in relation to their National Identity and Mental Health
Summary:
The threat that a person feels from a different group other than his own is associated with his mental well-being in two ways. Directly in a negative way, because as the sense of threat increases, mental well-being decreases and indirectly in a positive way, through the mediation of social identity, because as the sense of threat grows, the person's identity is also strengthened, which has a positive effect on his psychological prosperity. The aim of this research is to investigate the relationship between the attitudes of Greek teenagers towards immigrants and their mental health. The survey involved 589 adolescents, students of the first class of high school from various schools in Attica. The questionnaire of the CATCH-EyoU research project, which examines the various forms of participation of young people in social life, what is important to them, but also how similar or different they are from other groups, was given to the participants. The results confirmed the indirect relationship between attitudes and mental health, but not the direct one. Adolescents who hold a negative attitude towards the immigrant group are expected to have a stronger national identity and hence higher levels of mental well-being. On the other hand, high tolerance of adolescents towards immigrants is indirectly linked to reduced psychological well-being through the mediation of reduced identification with the ethnic group.
