Experiential activities in the context of a drug treatment program: Exploitation of Sophocles' Aia tragedy
Summary:
This paper focuses on the study of factors favoring critical thinking in adult education within a drug addiction treatment program. The literature review based on the basic principles of adult education the major role of art in this context as well as the training and the characteristics of former drug users as presented below have been a springboard for the design and implementation of a case study which was an action research as the writer had both the role of adult educator and researcher. The main purpose of this research is to investigate whether, the exploitation of Sophocles' ancient tragedy "Ajax" through experiential activities and techniques taken from the educational drama, in a nine-hour education program, can trigger the interest and participation of adult former drug users and lead towards the development of critical thinking with the ultimate goal of transforming dysfunctional points of view.
The results of the research have shown that the ancient tragedy, combined with the activities and theatrical "games", gained the interest of the trainees, who managed to think critically on various issues and most notably the question of dealing with ancient tragedies. They were able to transform even some of their views, but without the success of an in-depth transformation of a habit of mind. However, the survey reveals that participants were able to relate issues that were affected by the tragedy with issues that worry them in their everyday lives, while the positive feelings created by the participants during the meetings seemed to have had a positive effect on these people’s "battle" against addictions.
This research suggests new ways of empowering and supporting adult former drug addicts with art education being the center of these efforts and is estimated to be able to contribute to the enrichment of educational programs that work in rehabilitation centers against addictions.
