Career Decision Making: The relationships among emotional intelligence and career decision self-efficacy in high school adolescents with and without learning disabilities
Summary:
The following dissertation investigates the scientific literature in order to explore the relationships among emotional intelligence, career decision self-efficacy and difficulties in career decision making in high school adolescents with and without learning disabilities. The core background theory in which we based our research was the Social Cognitive Career Theory. It was conducted relevant research with the aim of examining the above variables between the two different groups of students. Our sample consisted of 36 students with learning disabilities and 36 students without learning disabilities that completed three questionnaires: the Career Decision Difficulties Scale (CDDQ), the Career Decision Self-efficacy Scale (CDSE-SF) and the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS). According to our findings emotional intelligence can be considered predictive factor of difficulties in career decision making and career decision making self-efficacy of the adolescents without learning disabilities. More specifically, the subscales of emotional intelligence (appraisal and recognition of emotion in others) and (regulation of emotion in the self) function as predictive factors of career decision self-efficacy, whereas the subscale regarding the use of emotion functions as a predictive factor of career decision difficulties in this specific group of students. In contrast, in students with learning disabilities only the subscale concerning the use of emotion functions as predictive factor of career decision self-efficacy. Furthermore, there are no statistical significant results in the relationships among career decision difficulties and career decision self-efficacy and emotional intelligence in the same group of students. Finally, the results of this research could be applied to secondary education and in the career guidance of the adolescents with and without learning disabilities.
