The Therapeutic Treatment of Drug Addiction
Summary:
Nowadays, drug addiction is on the rise. Therefore, drug therapy is more relevant than ever, both internationally and nationally. At the same time, the debate about whether or not the paternalistic rupture of individual sovereignty for one’s sake is legitimate brings up deeper philosophical and social questions, such as whether a form of compulsory or even forced treatment is acceptable.
This paper deals with the aforementioned issues. First of all, some basic terms related to substances are clarified, such as “drugs” and “addiction”. Moreover, the most known substances are presented, as well as useful data of substance use and addiction in US and Europe, so that the reader understands the magnitude of the problem. The second section begins by listing different views on the etiology of dependence, followed by the presentation of different treatment programs, the drug-free and the substitution programs. Information on their nature and their presence in US and Europe is provided, together with a full analysis of their Greek representatives, KETHEA and OKANA, respectively. The section closes with a comparative overview of the two programs. The final section deals with the concept of paternalism and its relevance to the criminal and the therapeutic treatment of addicts. More specifically, the options that a paternalistic law offers to users, the new rehabilitation models and the relative analysis of the Greek Law 4139/2013 can be found here. The work is completed by quoting the views of the writer, following his engagement with the objects under consideration.
