Summary:
African american spirituals, are a vocal genre, which was born out of the need of the enslaved African American people, to express their feelings about the unfavorable situations that they were confronted. Over the years, this particular genre evolved and at the same time, influenced other music genres. Also, it is a necessity to mention, that spirituals are always at the center of the artistic interest. In this thesis, are examined issues of interpretation between various recordings - old and new as well- that are performed mainly by vocal schemes, either "a capella", or accompanied by musical instruments. In conclusion, in order to deeper and better understanding of this specific topic, it was a necessity to enlist historical and social information.
