Summary:
This thesis focuses on and delves into the nature of female criminality, through the assessment of international patterns which have existed over time. Throughout the ages, different societies have implemented a wide range of criminal justice policies. The first and the second chapters examine the social construction of the gender, analyzing in detail multiple theories concerning the causes of female criminality. In particular, this thesis presents the approaches of the Classical School of Criminology, in the context of classical and modern biological theories, as well as the approaches of Modern Criminology, through the feminist theories, especially in regards to the liberal, critical and postmodern feminist perspectives. The third chapter looks into the criminal justice policies concerning female criminality in several jurisdictions across Europe and North America, while examining meticulously and in great detail the case of the Greek criminal justice policies. The prison policies regarding female criminality are presented in the fourth chapter, analyzing the creation and the evolution of these policies in multiple European and North American countries. In addition, the chapter examines the prison policy in the Greek justice system, with a special focus on sensitive cases of female prisoners, such as mothers and drug users. Finally, it was deemed necessary to include the contribution of international law in showcasing, protecting and securing the rights of female prisoners inside the criminal justice system.
