Representations of pregnant women concerning the baby they carry and their maternal function. A qualitative study between pregnancies through natural fertilization and those through assisted reproduction methods( homologous and heterologous fertilization through oocyte donation)
Summary:
This project comprises an initial research effort aiming to examine the
representation of pregnant women, concerning the baby they carry and the
maternal function, in cases when pregnancy was the result of natural fertilization
and those when it was the result of various assisted reproduction methods
(homologous and heterologous fertilization through oocyte donation.)
Fifteen interviews were carried out and the resulting data was analysed based on the
principles of thematic analysis. The questions posed to the participants concerned their
pregnancy, their representations of the baby they were carrying and the maternal function
they were due to start performing. Also, some questions referred to their relationships
with their own mothers as well as their partners.
The answers of the participants from all three groups about their pregnancy included
references to feelings of stress, anxiety and fear for any potential complications, even in
cases in which no pathological findings had been found, something which was more true
for pregnant women through natural fertilization. Ascertained worrying findings of the
fetus and other complications during pregnancy led some of the participants to express
the corresponding emotional reactions, while in some other cases these issues seemed to
delay the representation process of the baby, as it is evident in participants who got
pregnant through assisted reproduction methods.
Concerning the group of women whose pregnancy was the result of assisted reproduction
methods it is obvious that their great desire to have a baby contributed to overcoming any
doubts or questions they might have expressed about these methods. Moreover, for those
women who proceeded with getting an oocyte from another woman-donator, the fact of
gestation by themselves was a determining factor in their decision to accept the donation.
Both in the cases of women whose pregnancy was the result of natural fertilization and
those who resorted to assisted reproduction methods but with the use of their own genetic
material, the representative picture they had of their babies and their natural
characteristics consisted of pieces of their own characteristics, those of their partners and
also those of beloved relatives. Those characteristics were mainly according to their6
preferences and their desires. There is a similar trend when these women are asked to
represent their babies in terms of temperament and personality traits.
For those women whose pregnancy was the result exclusively through oocyte donation,
their representations concerning the characteristics of the baby are formed only on the
basis of the characteristics of their partner or his wider family, excluding in this way any
influence of unknown and unwanted characteristics of the woman-donor. As far as the
personality characteristics are concerned, all women place great importance to nurture
and the upbringing that they themselves will provide, considering that this will be the
defining factor in the shaping of the baby's personality, independent of any negative traits
inherited by the donor.
The representations of women who resorted to oocyte donation for their maternal
function, indicate more clearly the element of their adequacy in their role as a mother
which they will soon be called to undertake and the ability to form a more positive
connection with the baby they carry, in contrast to the women of the other two categories.
