"Teacher's (ΠΕ070) views, regarding speech therapists role for pupils with learning disabilities"
Summary:
This paper explains the views of primary school teachers and specifically teachers of specialty “ΠΕ070”, regarding the role of speech therapists for pupils with learning disabilities. The purpose of the research was to capture and explore the views of the teachers of the modern general Greek school on the issues of: a) the introduction of speech therapy programs for pupils with learning difficulties, b) the abilities of speech therapists on the issue of learning difficulties, and c) possible co-operation between teachers and speech therapists, who will take on students with learning disabilities for the conduction of specific conclusions The research was conducted using a questionnaire, with closed type questions. The participants are employed at government general primary schools in the Prefecture of Attica and in particular the Southern Suburbs and the Center.
During the process of research and analysis of the findings, it was identified among other findings that school teachers with 0-11 years of services, believe that they are less aware of language and speech problems, compared to school teachers that have 11-24 years and above of service. Furthermore, the graduates of “Pedagogical Academy” consider to a lesser extent, among the graduates of “Π.Τ.Δ.Ε.” that Speech and Language Therapists are able to take on pupils with shortcomings – difficulties in writing.
An innovative point is the fact that graduates of the “Pedagogical Academy”, would, to a lesser extent, refer parents/guardians to speech therapists, for interference with the learning difficulties of their children. Finally, another innovative finding of the research shows that school teachers felt, that speech therapists need additional training for learning difficulties, however it was noted that they would work together with them.
Concerning the findings of the research, it is noted, among other findings, that the majority are 49 years and older, and also that most of them do not have any specialization. Linguistic weaknesses lead to learning difficulties therefore co-operation between speech therapists and special pedagogues is considered necessary. Additionally, it is considered necessary to integrate speech therapists into the general school, as well as that speech therapists can help teachers to better understand learning difficulties.
