Summary:
This study detects the level of preparedness on natural disaster issues of the students in the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens. In the framework of this study, cases of crisis management in universities of Europe and America have been analyzed.
More specifically this study presents the results of a survey aimed to investigate the level of training and preparedness of students concerning measures on earthquake protection. Furthermore, implementation of these measures at individual, family and higher education level, are explored. Also, the survey questionnaire investigates issues regarding pre-earthquake protection actions, appropriate attitudes, emotions and behaviors of students during the earthquake, existence of contingency plans in the university, simulation drills etc. Particular emphasis is given to the role the National Technical University has played in informing them about the protection measures to be taken. This study is divided into five parts with five chapters.
The first chapter refers on natural disaster issues and the seismicity of Greece. The 2nd chapter focuses on the description of natural disaster management cases in Europe and America. Chapter 3 refers to enhancing disaster preparedness in universities. Chapter 4 focuses to the survey results. A closed-form questionnaire was developed for the research that addressed to the students of the School of Civil Engineering of National Technical University of Athens. The 5th chapter includes the conclusions and suggestions in order to build awareness, increase preparedness and ensure emergency response at higher education environments, towards safety and welfare of all.
