Dental clinic information system with multimedia processing capabilities
Summary:
The last decades of computer science progress, have contributed to a substantial improvement to the whole spectrum of provided health services. The advantages of use of electronic health records and electronic organization in any health provider, have been well established and proven. Apart from these fields, health informatics may provide new diagnostics applications to the medical personnel, that lead to better therapeutic treatment of patients. Computer science, thus, is connected firmly and steadily to the medical act, and becomes an important tool in the hands of the medical community.
This dissertation aims at the creation of an information system for use in a dental clinic. The aforementioned system will cover the necessity of dental record keeping for each individual patient, with the added capability of storing relevant multimedia files (such as x-rays or pictures). Patient data comprise demographics, general health history and dental history – treatment plans. Every patient’s visit to the clinic takes a new record in dental history, where diagnosis, dental treatments and treatment plans are recorded. Patient photos and x-rays are stored with the dental history records.
Apart from storage, picture files and radiographs may be presented and processed, in order to achieve a correct and exact diagnosis of dental ailments. This x-ray processing procedure includes functions like magnification or size reduction, color inversion (negative effect), and adjustment of brightness, contrast and image gamma. These abilities turn the application into a powerful and efficient diagnostic tool, with capabilities impossible to replace with traditional, non-electronic methods. The diagnostics and radiograph tools that are included in this application, are integral and closely connected to the dental health record. In this manner, image processing and dental record keeping is a unified and streamlined process.
Finally, this information system will also take on the role of scheduling the clinic’s work, keeping patient appointments in the clinic, which comprises a number of dental chairs and doctors. Operations scheduling and patient appointments management are very common functions within an organized clinic. However, with the assistance of information technology, every person in the medical and assistance personnel has immediate, concurrent and direct access to the clinic’s work schedule, resulting in error avoidance and clinic’s work streamlining.
This information system is a Microsoft Windows application, based on a Microsoft Access database and a Microsoft .Net – Winforms interface. Microsoft Access is a very common database management system, while the Windows operating system is the de facto standard in office – clinic environments. The development of the application is object oriented and was done in the C# programming language, making use of the Microsoft Visual Studio IDE.
