Analysis of stresses and deformations of underground chambers and pillars in a marble quarry using a numerical method
Summary:
The first chapter of this diploma thesis refers to the elements of the area, such as the morphology of the area, but also a concise description of the characteristics of the work. In addition, the types of outdoor exploitation of the deposits as well as the forms of the fronts as they form during the surface open exploitation are listed. An attempt to detail the geology and hydrogeology of the area is done in Chapter 2. The area is basically structured by metamorphic rocks as it belongs to the so-called "Rodopi Mass" and falls within the internal tectonometral zone. The quarry is built of marbles of the Pangaean section, which is characterized by a thick carbon platform on a gneiss background. These marbles are divided into two large groups, the dolomite and the limestone marble, which have been studied for their mineral composition as they are (mainly dolomite marble) the main exploitable marble thanks to the almost complete absence of ash of calcareous material. Regarding the tectonic character of the area, both of its species are observed in the area of the quarry area (repellent and pleural). Regarding the terrestrial tectonics of this area, it includes the fracture systems observed in this area of interest, the fracture systems as they were identified in the quarry, and the discontinuities at a more local scale that were recorded during the exploitation of the marble in the quarry subterranean quarters, while some micro-tectonic elements have been included in the plexus tectonics. In the 4th chapter of the paper, there is presented the seismicity of the wider region, as it has been formed due to the two main dead zones, namely the Dragos River and the Kavala - Xanthi - Komotini zone. Also, in this chapter there are some references to historical earthquakes that have taken place. The description of the numerical methods of stress and strain analysis of rock excavations and of the numerical method of the discrete elements used to analyze stresses and deformations of the underground chambers and pillars in the underground exploitation of marble in this quarry is made in Chapter 5 In addition, the construction stages of the three-dimensional mechanical model using the discrete element method and the results thereof, accompanied by rich material of images, presenting in the same chapter. The last chapter 6 summarizes the data that have emerged during the diploma thesis and outlines the conclusions that we conclude with regard to the stability of the quarry area after the extraction of the two floors of marble (882-895m absolute altitude) has been done so far.
