Summary:
Introduction: In Advanced Life Support non-technical skills play a key role in addition to technical skills.
Purpose: The purpose of this research is to highlight the importance of non-technical skills to trained in Advanced Life Support (ALS).
Method: Questionnaires were used as the tool, consisting of 31 closed questions and 4 open questions. The questionnaires that were shared were 57 and 50 of them were completed, and the sample consisted of doctors (various specialties) and nurses.
Results: 90% of respondents are informed of the location of the cardiac arrest. 96% are informed by the rest of staff about what preceded the cardiac arrest. 92% think they have the abilities and skills required to deal with a cardiac arrest. 90% said there was no resuscitation team in the workplace and 80% did not make the necessary recommendations in each shift to pre-define the team members. 54% believe it has the characteristics of a good leader. 60% recognize all team members with their names and abilities. In high enough percentages they feel they are communicative (70%), good at giving instructions (72%) and managing controversies if they emerge (70%). 62% think it can exert power when needed. All of them without exception (100%) answered they call someone more special when necessary, while 76% consider that is able to make the decision to continue or stop resuscitation. 79% consider that the application of non-technical skills have a positive effect on the good outcome of the patient, while 86% think extra time should be added in the training of non-technical skills.
Conclusions: The general conclusions of this research are that non-technical skills have a positive outcome for the patient, further training in non-technical skills is needed, the creation of resuscitation teams is necessary, and the development of leadership skills should be considered as an integral part of training for resuscitation.
