Psychosocial Characteristics of Juvenile Deliquency
Summary:
Juvenile delinquency is a modern, global social phenomenon that has attracted the interest of many researchers cause of its wide-ranging dimensions and the peculiarity of childhood, teenage and after puberty age. The main aim of this research is the investigation of the psychosocial characteristics of the inmates at the Avlona detention facility; aged 18-22, who committed offenses in childhood. The purpose of the research was to present the adverse childhood experiences before committing the delinquent behavior, while their self-image and the level of satisfaction of their life as a whole were evaluated through self-reports of the detainees. The sample of the survey constituted 120 male offenders, who started the offense before 18 years old. The tools used were The Big Five Inventory, the Rosenberg self-esteem scale, the General Health Questionnaire 12- items, the scale of the meaning of life and a list of demographics and life events. From the results it became obvious that juvenile offenders usually come from families with low socio-economic background, have poor education, have experienced adverse childhood experiences and associate with other delinquent peers. In addition, it was found that with regard to their personality they are quite conscientious, agreeable, emotionally tolerant, moderately extrovert, while exhibiting reduced inventiveness and openness to new experiences. They experience psychological distress cause of their lack of meaning and purpose in their lives, while they are looking for something or someone to give meaning to their lives. However, their self-esteem was found to be normal. Finally, the findings of this research will be discussed in the context of drafting proposals for future research on reducing and suppressing the phenomenon of juvenile delinquency.
