The contribution of climatic change
towards malaria spreading across Europe
Summary:
Intense changes in climatic conditions during the past years contribute towards the expression of vector-borne diseases, amongst which is malaria.
The purpose of the current thesis was the investigation of the effect of climatic change towards malaria spreading in Europe. Therefore, different predictive models of climatic changes were evaluated, the majority of which is focused upon recording changes in the parameter of mean temperature.
The current bibliographic data are inconclusive in terms of deduction of a uniform conclusion, regarding the effect of climatic change in relation to specific mosquito population groups. The mixed role of climatic change, either positive or negative, in terms of malaria transmission in different European countries, highlights the need for optimization of combined mechanistic and statistical models. The ultimate goal should be the discovery and implementation of realistic preventive scenarios of the long-term consequences of climatic change.
