Summary:
Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregancy (ICP) is a complication of pregnancy with an ever-increasing occurrence rate. It occurs approximately in the 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy. Pruritus is a characteristic symptom.
The necessity of diagnosis and differential diagnosis is necessary in attempting to exclude other possible liver diseases. However, its treatment is still under investigation. Ursodeoxycholic acid is mainly used.
The risk for the baby and the possible complications are limited if the childbirth occurs before the 37th week of pregnancy. ICP develops well, both for the mother and for the newborn. However, a medical check-up is essential for mother to assess the course of the disease. ICP affects pregnant women not only organically but also psychologically, so it is essential the support by the doctor and their familiar environment.
