Corruption of the public sector from the private sector
Summary:
Τhe thesis’ subject is to explore the explanations of the phenomenon of corruption, and especially the phenomenon of corruption in Greece, that the science of Criminology can contribute, by choosing certain criminological theories. The thesis focuses on examining the phenomenon of corruption through the prism of certain criminological theories in order to contribute to a better understanding of its causes. A multifaced study and understanding of the phenomenon can lead to an informed choice of the most effective ways to reduce it. For the purposes of the thesis, the following theoretical approaches have been chosen: the theory of differential association, the theory of strain, the “techniques of neutralization” and the syndrome of injustice, the theory of self-control and the theories of social control, the label of corruption (an approach of symbolic interactionism), the theory of rational choice, the theory of corruption as a routine business activity. The thesis examines the fact that the main focus of the debate about corruption of the public sector is the “corrupted” public sector and not the “corrupter” private sector. Furthernore, a case study was held about a case of passive bribery of an officer of urban planning. The study’s findings are related to the denial of responsibility as a neutralization technique, to the theory of strain, the theory of differential association, the theory of corruption as a routine business activity and the theory of rational choice.
