"Couple and Addiction: The effects of gambling addiction on the couple"

The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions and experiences of gambling addicts and their spouses/partners. The aim of the survey is to highlight the meaning that gamblers find in this addiction and the effects of it in personal and family life. Meanwhile, ways of dealing with critical events occurring in the period of addiction are studied. Furthermore, the motives that lead men and women to seek treatment are investigated, aiming at changing themselves and improving their lives. Finally, the benefits of treatment to the individual and the couple are studied.
In order to carry out this research, the qualitative methodology was chosen. The research tool is biography. More specifically, 60 biographies were gathered by 30 gamblers and their 30 spouses / partners, whose data responded to the above research axes. The biographies were collected with the collaboration of KETHEA ALFA, a Gambling Relief Program, which secured access to its archive and the information of the patients. The method of analyzing biographies is the content analysis, through which categories were created for each of the research axes, highlighting a significant number of results for each axis.
The conclusions drawn from this research are to a significant extent complementary to the existing literature and can be useful both in gambling treatment and in the prevention of addiction.
