Rejection Sensitivity and Bullying/Victimization: The Role of Emotion Regulation.
Summary:
Rejection Sensitivity refers to a widely known theoretical model according to which individuals, that have been rejected by their caregivers or/and their peers, tend to anxiously expect and stay alert to perceive potential rejection in their interpersonal relationships.
The functionality of emotions lies in the effort of individuals to control the type, the time of appearance and the way of living and expressing their emotions to cope with the different aspects of everyday life (Emotion Regulation), influencing differently the individual and his / her quality of life. Both rejection sensitivity and emotion regulation have been linked to the phenomenon of School Bullying/Victimization, where a child can be intentionally and systematically threatened and intimidated by peers at school.
The aim of this research is to study the rejection sensitivity in children and the extent to which they are involved in bullying and victimization, taking into account the role of two of the emotional regulation strategies, expressive suppression and cognitive reappraisal. The variables studied were derived from standard self-report questionnaires in a random sample of the fifth grade of primary school pupils. Furthermore, the variables were analyzed with the SPSS software PROCESS model to investigate the relationship between rejection sensitivity and school bullying as well as the influence of emotion regulation in the aspect of a mediator or/and moderator.
The relationship between rejection sensitivity and school bullying was confirmed by the findings of the present study, as well as the association of school bullying with the emotion regulation. The mediating role of emotion regulation in the relationship between school bullying and rejection sensitivity was not confirmed, but the declining use of expressive suppression by children that anxiously expect rejection can moderate their involvement as bullies to school bullying phenomenon.
