Assessment readiness of nurses of the General Hospital of Agios Nikolaos Crete in mass casualty incidents and detection of relevant educational needs.
Summary:
Ιntroduction: It is a fact that casualty incidents occur more and more frequently in recent
years. The General Hospital of Agios Nikolaos is the secondary medical institution of the
prefecture of Lasithi. Staff working on it must be prepared and appropriately trained to deal
with cases of massive incidents.
Aim: The aim is to investigate the preparedness of the health personnel of the General
Hospital of Agios Nikolaos, in the case of mass casualty incidents and the necessity of
continuing education in emergency situations.
Methods: The study population is the permanent nursing staff. The research field is the
whole of the Hospital nursing staff (N = 115). The method we used is the questionnaire
survey. A review of the literature was conducted through the Pubmed, Scopus and Google
Scholar scientific libraries134 nurses are participated in research.
Results: Most of the nurse is in technological education. 52% believe that the hospital
has a mci design, but 83% of them do not read it. 89% have never participated in an
emergency training plan. 83% do not know if the hospital has a contingency plan and 71%
say that continuing nursing education should be prepared by the hospital entirely. Finally,
but not least, 97% believe that nurses should be trained for mci.
Conclusions: Nursing readiness is a continuous process. Healthcare staff are not up to
date and are unprepared because they have not been involved in preparedness exercises.
Exercises should not be treated by those responsible as a fragmentary activity but as part
of an integrated and ongoing training and staff training program to increase the
preparedness of nursing staff by making our hospitals more resistant to the consequences
of a mass event or of a disaster.
