The relationship between hope, adult attachment, client attachment to therapist and therapeutic alliance in psychotherapy clients
Summary:
Counselling provides a vital space to support life, development and healing from traumatic experiences. The role of hope in counseling and psychotherapy has received attention and its importance is indisputable. The purpose of this study is to investigate hope in association with adult attachment in psychotherapy patients. These two basic variables are being considered together with individual parameters of the therapeutic relationship, in other words the client’s attachment to therapist and the therapeutic alliance. The sample consisted of 41 (10 men and 31 women) psychotherapy services recipients. Data collection was conducted by using self-report questionnaires. According to the results, hope is positively correlated with the avoidance subscale of adult attachment orientation and negatively with the anxiety subscale. Regarding the relationship between hope and the client’s attachment to therapist as well as the therapeutic alliance, the reported results were statistically non-significant. In addition, anxiety appeared to be positively related to secure and preoccupied-merger CATS subscales, while non-statistically significant correlation was found between both dimensions of adult attachment and the therapeutic alliance. Finally, examining the relationship between therapeutic alliance and the client’s attachment to therapist indicated on one hand, a significant positive relationship between client secure attachment to the therapist and the therapeutic alliance and on the other hand, a significant negative relationship between client avoidant-fearful attachment and the alliance. The above findings highlight the need for a multilateral way of understanding and interpreting hope and attachment, while providing empirical verification of their role in therapeutic relationship. The methodological constraints are discussed and suggestions are made for future research, as well as for the application of findings in the field of Counselling Psychology.
