First PM10 particulate concentration measurements and their organic and elemental carbon content in indoor and outdoor environment
Summary:
This study focuses on the measurement of air concentration in PM10 particles as well as their content of organic and elemental carbon in indoor and outdoor sites. Specifically, the measurements were carried out in a classroom of the 2nd Elementary School of Nea Smyrni and on its roof. We analyzed the first measurements and investigated any relationships or differences between the two measurement sites. The main conclusions that emerged from the analysis so far are as follows:
1) PM10 particles in the classroom and on the terrace consist mainly of OC, and their concentrations in the air are within the boundaries of the European Environment Committee.
2) Concentrations of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) on the roof and in the room are related to temperature changes.
3) During the period January-February, significant correlations between PM10, OC and EC concentrations were found, indicating either that they originated from the same primary source or that there was increased room-roof air communication due to the large difference at the air temperature of the two sites.
4) The OC / TC ratio showed that organic and elemental carbon probably originated from different sources.
Collecting more measurements will enhance the reliability of the above findings.
