Management and educational exploitation of popular culture at Centres for people with mental disorders and autism
Summary:
This assignment explores by means of observation the ways in which manifestations of popular culture are used and employed educationally by Special Education Centres and whether mentally disabled people or suffering from autism or Asperger are familiar with using elements of popular culture.
The methodology of this assignment was based on participant observation following on-the-spot investigation conducted in Special Education Centres in the prefecture of Attica with a view to involve the researcher- writer in the special categories of people who suffer from the disorders mentioned above. The method used was tape recording.
The assignment applies an interdisciplinary approach since the goals and results are achieved through the synergy of folkloristics, Special Education, Psychology and Theatrical Studies.
It consists of the preface, an introduction with incorporated subchapters commenting on the incentives driving this work, as well as the assumptions and concerns in terms of folkloristics; it also includes eight chapters analysed as such: the first chapter entitled ‘’ Folkloristics and Education’’ cites historical references to the time- honored convergence of folkloristics along with Education and the contribution of teachers to its promotion, the historical flashback of schools through the centuries and at the same time the subject of folkloristics, the study of popular culture, as it is formed by the peasant, middle and working classes alike.
References are made to folklore, the place of ‘’children’’ and ‘’childhood’’ within folklore and the continuity of playing games as found both in primitive and developed civilizations.
The second chapter comes under the title ‘’ Mental disability, autism and Education. A challenge for Folklore’’ and includes extensive references to the mental disability disorders under examination, including autism and the Asperger syndrome. A differentiated education is therefore necessary for these special categories of people, as they are extremely disparate not only concerning the particularities of the individual, but also the timely diagnosis given.
The third chapter titled ‘’ Concise presentation of Study Educational Centres’’ elaborates on the elements of the centres on which the research was based. In the fourth chapter under the title ‘’Physical Education, sports activities and games’’, sports activities and the way in which they affect psychology and socialization are explored. In the fifth chapter ‘’ Dance and Music’’ suggests the decisive role dance and music play in their daily routine. In the sixth chapter entitled ‘’ Theatre and Drama activities’’ the students’ actions involving the study, preparation and organization of a theatrical performance along with the way in which they initiate themselves into self- discipline and ownership are presented. In the seventh chapter entitled ‘’ Fairytales and other forms of Folklore’’ there are references to the employment of story- telling as a means for special education teachers to initiate their students into socialization and integration into groups. Finally, in the eighth chapter ‘’ Folklore and crafts’’ several activities falling into the fields of weaving, Fine Arts, craft- making and even cooking and pastry making.
Obviously, teachers and students alike use forms of popular culture even unaware of doing so. Through the activities of physical training, sports, drama, story- telling and folklore, students develop social skills and behaviors, enhance their feeling of entering and belonging to a group and last but not least, they are initiated into popular culture through which they can develop communication with their place of origin and forge their identity.
