Summary:
ABSTRACT
Introduction: The population of Greece is characterized as «aged», as a significant part of it belongs to the elderly. As people grow up, the risks of a possible fall are becoming more and more. So, not only their prevention but also their confrontation are really important.

Purpose: The main purpose of this research was the record of the fall incidents of elderly people in Care facilities for Elderly People.

Methodology: This research is an epidemiological one. The studied sample consisted of 144 people who living in 2 different Care facilities for Elderly People, one in Moschato and the second one in Koukaki, neighborhoods in Athens. For the data collection a special recording form was used. Then, in order to process the data the “Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) ver.22 was used.

Results: Out of the 144 participants ,63,2% were women, the majority of them between 76-80 years old, widows with children. Most of them referred that falls were caused by various external factors, when the rest of them referred that were caused by dizziness. Only in a few cases these falls caused death to patients, while the majority were hospitalized and followed by home surveillance. As far as the fracture site is concerned, 63,2% of the patients were injured in the hip and a surgery was necessary. The place where the fall was caused seemed to be relevant if hospitalization was necessary or whether they got medical surveillance. Last but not least, the weight of patients, whether they were hospitalized, the medical surveillance they got, the next stage after the fracture and all the results that fall caused to them are relevant to the exact point that the fracture was caused.

Conclusion: Physical exercise and the information for the elderly are an integral part of fall prevention strategies in the elderly.
