Factors of psychological resilience in oncology nurses: An interpretative- phenomenological analysis
Summary:
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the factors that contribute to the psychological resilience of oncology nurses and the factors that help them handle the difficulties of their profession. In order to find the nurses that exhibited increased resilience, we administrated questionnaires to 47 oncology nurses in Attiki. Through this process we identified 5 resilient women who were interviewed with semi-structured interviews. Interpretative-phenomenological analysis was chosen as the appropriate method for this study. Six master themes emerged: Support, active coping, maturing through work, positive attitude, transforming difficulties and setting boundaries. These themes are some of the protective factors that helped these nurses remain resilient against the difficulties of their job. The findings are discussed in relation to extant literature. This study could be very useful as there are no similar studies in Greece exploring resilience in oncology nurses.
