Summary:
There are a lot of Νew Greek playwrights that get inspiration from the world of Shadow Theatre and bring Karagiozis to life on stage. This paper is an attempt at a documentation of the published theatrical plays and the professional performances in the 20th and 21st century that include the hunchback hero. The structure, plot and character typology and their degree of convergence with the traditional Greek Shadow Theatre is examined while analysing the plays. Taken under consideration are, also, the historic-political conditions of each of the time periods, the developments of the Greek theatre scene in comparison to the Shadow Theatre and the folklore tradition, the theoretical views of the writers and the ideological content of the plays. A large part of this study is focused on the use of Karagiozis as a symbol and his connection with issues of political, social, national and cultural identity.
