Digital technology and the migrant crisis: Quantitative and qualitative research
Summary:
In recent years, the size of the forcibly displaced people is the largest ever recorded, creating the "international migrant crisis", one of the most serious global problems, resulting in polarization and intense political and social controversy. This study examines the ways and the extent of the exploitation of digital technology to address specific needs of the migrant population. For this purpose, an inventory of the available digital applications was carried out and 281 were identified, grouped, studied and evaluated in terms of their main characteristics and the effectiveness of their purpose.
The study has shown that while the use of digital technology for interconnection, communication and information purposes is crucial to the migrants, the majority of the applications that were developed specifically to address these issues, especially after 2015, have failed to meet their goals. These conclusions were confirmed and supplemented, during the next stage, through qualitative research interviews with refugees. The whole process has also highlighted areas of concern from the use of digital technology, such as personal data security, the spread of false news, as well as the development of applications without rules and control.
In the third and final stage of the study, using the digital storytelling method, the role of digital technology in the lives of refugees and their attitude towards it,¬ was recorded. Through this process, the method of digital storytelling as a research tool was also evaluated. The study concludes with a series of recommendations regarding the exploitation of digital technology to address more effectively, specific needs of refugees.
