Experiences of African refugees who have recently arrived in Greece: an interpretative phenomenological approach
Summary:
This study adopts interpretative phenomenological approach to examine and describe refugees’ experiences from sub-Saharan African countries that arrived in Greece during the last two years. The aim of the research is to understand in depth their life experiences, their needs, their difficulties and their strengths, the ways they have so far cope with the problems they encountered in their journey. Semi-structured interviews with five African refugees were conducted for data collection. The research findings showed that participants were forced to leave their country to escape life threats due to political and religious persecution, civil warfare, torture and failure to meet basic human needs. They escaped and managed to survive thanks to the help of their fellow men during their transitional phase. They moved from country to country seeking security and arrived in our country surviving a very dangerous trip in the Aegean Sea. In Greece, they found a first shelter and tried to use the help they receive from formal and informal institutions as well as personal sources of support, to cope with psychosomatic consequences and social difficulties and to rebuild their lives.
