Εarthly and transcendental elements in the poetic work of Angelos Sikelianos and Yannis Ritsos
Summary:
The present dissertation attempts to detect earthly and transcendental elements in the poetic work of Angelos Sikelianos and Yannis Ritsos. In doing so, it focuses on the dialogue between the two poets. In order to discuss the ideas of “earthly” and “transcendental”, I begin by referring to the literary theory concerning the orphic idea in poetry. I then proceed to a comparative study of certain poetic compositions of Sikelianos and of Ritsos, in which this idea manifests itself in various ways. The study is structured in three parts. The first concerns the earthly and transcendental view of nature, the second the poet’s role in society, and the third the use of the Christian motif. The comparative study allows us to detect points of convergence and of divergence in the work of the two poets, while at the same time allowing us to trace the evolution of their ideas as regards socio-historical reality as well as the role the poet is able to play in it.
