The necessity of green procurement in the public sector
Summary:
The Greek State for the purchase of various goods (such as office equipment and buildings, transport equipment), for services (such as office maintenance, transport services, cleaning and catering), energy and various projects is the main buyer for the national economy, since the volume of transactions for these supplies, as one can imagine, is too great, since public procurement accounts for almost 20% of GDP.
So we can easily understand how important the environmental impacts of all the above can be during their lifetime from their production, use and disposal, since they are considered responsible for both the greenhouse effect, the pollution the atmosphere, the reduction of biodiversity, and the depletion of natural resources.
By using their strong purchasing power, government agencies, if they turn to green procurement (i.e. those that take into account both environmental and social considerations) and help develop the cyclical economy, can play an important role in the trend to produce and consume as green as possible green goods by promoting green growth and changing production and consumption patterns.
