The relationship between economic distress, parents-adolescents conflict and autonomy with the mental health of adolescents
Summary:
The present study aims to examine the relationship between economic distress and mental health of adolescents, as well as the role of conflicts between parents and teenagers and the autonomy granted by parents, in this relationship. In particular, this work aims to investigate the following questions: (a) if economic distress is a risk factor for mental health; (b) if family variables (father autonomy, mother autonomy, conflict frequency) are a promotional or protective factor against economic hardship in relation to the mental health of adolescents. The sample consisted of 383 teenagers (52.5% boys and 47.5 girls) from Greece, who attended the second grade of High School. The economic distress of the adolescent family was measured by the Lempers, Clark-Lempers and Simons (1989) Economic Distraction Questionnaire. The examination of autonomy was carried out using the Autonomy Granting Scale (Sessa & Steinberg 1991, as reported in Bush et al., 2002), while the Parent-Adolescent Conflicts (A.St.R.A) questionnaire was used for the frequency of conflicts (Motti-Stefanidi et al., 2011). The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) was used for the evaluation of emotional symptoms and anxiety (Goodman, Meltzer and Bailey, 1998) and the Depression Scale (DEPS) for the depressive symptomatology (Salokangas, Poutanen and Stengard, 1995). In general, the results shows that economic distress is a potential risk factor, while each of the family variables acts as a potential promoter but not as a protective factor for the studied dimensions of mental health of adolescents. Finally, in line with the results of many studies, significant transcendental differences in depressive and emotional symptoms were found.
