Τhe History of the Latin rule in the Peloponnese as portrayed by Angelos Terzakis in his work "Princess Isabeau"
Summary:
The present thesis entitled «Τhe History of the Latin rule in the Peloponnese as portrayed by Angelos Terzakis in his work Princess Isabeau» focuses on the historical framework which is analysed in the popular historical novel Princess Isabeau written by a most significant author and thinker of Modern Greek literature, Angelos Terzakis. The period of the Frankish rule in the Peloponnese (Morea) during the 13th century is particularly interesting, because, as generally accepted, the Frankish Principality of Achaea is considered as the most representative and typical feudal state founded on the Greek territory of the ex-Byzantine Empire after the 4th Crusade (1204 A.D.). The historical novel Princess Isabeau can be characterized as a complex venture in which the feudal structures of the medieval world are successfully reflected . Nevertheless, the anthropographical and historical framework must not be seen as just a simple external decorative background within which an inspired, talented and skilled author constructs an exciting plot. History is proved to play a crucial role in the development of the myth and at the same time it contributes to the reader’s historical information. From this point of view the novel can be used as a secondary source of historiograhy. Through the individual stories of the heroes, whose actions are being developed around the central myth, the author portrays the social, economic, political and cultural morals of an important era. The main pillars of the present study are the historical sources of the author Angelos Terzakis and the utilization of the historical material in the novel which draw the reader’s attention to that specific era. The author delves into the long period of the Latin rule and the contribution of the medieval years to the creation of the so-called Hellenism, a matter that concerned most Greek intellectuals during the years between the two great wars. The same period has been a decisive factor to the realization of the common features among the enslaved Greeks, the recognition of the disparities and the formation of a national identity, indiscernible until that time within the borders of the multi-cultural Byzantine Empire. Through his novel the author Angelos Terzakis testifies, among others, his personal narrative regarding the construction of the features of the new Greek nation. Princess Isabeau considers this as a very important matter through the historical past viewed from a national perspective, which is positive towards the various cultural influences. The era of the Frankish and Latin rule claims to obtain a significant position in the evolution of Hellenism through the centuries, a position that will be considered by the Greeks as equally important to other historical periods (Antiquity, Middle Ages, Modern Era). The historical content that one can find in the third part of the thesis contributes to a better understanding of the narration while at the same time it creatively reinforces the understanding of the historical element and its decisive presence in the novel. Through the study of the main pillars of the current work a number of relative issues appear such as the one that examines the relationship between history and myth, the utilization of the tradition and the historical past in order to pose to the reader questions regarding permanent national, social and cultural matters. Princess Isabeau constitutes a very important example of utilizing literature as a complementary source regarding historical research and successfully proves that history can be effectively received within the context of a historical novel. Classical and more recent works and studies have been used in the research stage of this thesis. This research material draws upon the historical period of the Latin and Frankish rule in the Peloponnese as well as the historical novel as such. It has also relied on the works of the so-called «Generation of the ‘30s» and the life and literary production of the author Angelos Terzakis.
