Summary:
Progymnasmata constitute a total of oral and writing exercises, fourteen in total, which were used as educational objectives at the rhetoric schools, from the Ancient times till the 18th century A.C. In this paper, Egkomio, Psogos and Ithopoiia were applied as “template texts” from the teacher, in order to investigate the possibility of improving the writing speech of the students of the 5th grade in the Writing lesson. This certain research, makes an attempt to focus on sectors that concern the structure, the total and the individual number of the words and the paragraphs and the total number of the adjectives. Furthermore, the texts that were used as “templates” were not arbitrary, but they were promptly related to the attempt of fostering issues as empathy, social and environmental awareness and developing and probing the multicultural conscience of the students.
In order to complete the practical part of this paper, three research cases were expressed and concerned a) The difficulty of forming the structure of the text. b) The appearance of the limited number of the words, the paragraphs and the adjectives. c) The use of Progymnasmata as an implement to overcome the difficulties mentioned above. The computer program S.P.S.S. (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences was used for the quantitative review of the research. Specifically, after the intervention of Progymnasmata, the inferences are below: a) The evidence of a perfect structural imprint in the students’ writings was ascertained. b) The total and individual number of the words, the paragraphs and the adjectives was increased. c) The Progymnasmata constitute a trustworthy way of intervention for the various improvement in the students’ writings. Finally, we hope that the present paper, which is attempted for the first time in our country in the sector of the Primary Education, will be a motive for further scientific investigations, researches and studies to other grades of the Greek educational system.
