Summary:
The present dissertation examines the evidence related to irrigation systems in Greece and Fars (Iran) during the period between the 6th and the 4th century B.C.E. In both areas the study of ancient irrigation systems shows that we are dealing with one of the most complex problems in the known archaeological landscape. Despite the general familiarity of archaeologists with irrigation systems in ancient civilizations, understanding and discovering the traces of the irrigation system was always difficult. The frequent use of ancient canals over the course of a long period has added to the complexity of research challenges. This work is based on the premise that archaeological evidence and textual indications may significantly assist, when examined together, in drawing up a map of ancient Greek and Achaemenid irrigation practices.
This study aims to advance the discussion regarding the aspects of social culture and evolution of irrigation in classical Greece and Achaemenid Persia in order to obtain a better understanding of the landscape’s organization in both regions. It also examines the relationship, similarities, and differences between the landscape and environment of irrigation systems in the urban and rural settlements in Greece and Persia.
