The Lifelong Education as a factor of professional development of the workforce of Secondary Education: Motivations and Barriers in participation.
Summary:
ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study is to investigate the participation of the workforce of Secondary Education in non-formal education activities (vocational training or general education) in the context of Lifelong Learning, as well as the motivations and the barriers that promote or hinder this participation. The dependence of the professional development of teachers on their participation in training programs and the criteria by which they are selected, as well as the providers which, in their opinion, are appropriate for their implementation are being examined. Finally, the teachers' views on the contribution of training to the success of their work and the effectiveness of the school, as well as their proposals for improving the training activities, are explored. The sample of the survey is comprised of 105 Secondary Education teachers in the prefecture of Attica serving in the public school. The technique of triangulation was followed, which means that quantitative and qualitative research was combined to provide more secure conclusions. Quantitative research was based on a questionnaire with closed-ended questions, while semi-structured interviews were used in qualitative.
It has been compared with previous surveys (Karalis 2011, 2013, 2015-16 and Gertzou 2015) and there has been a gradual increase in the interest in participation in educational programs, which shows the consolidation of the institution of adult education for teachers.
The results of the survey show that teachers have a positive attitude to education, which they consider to be a basic prerequisite for individual and professional development.
