Summary:
Background: The internet is easily accessible, widely available and often unregulated, allowing users to access information on a variety of topics and to communicate with other people. However, its capabilities have attracted concerns over how it may negatively impact vulnerable individuals, such as people who are suicidal.
Objective: To systematically review research on how people use the internet for suicide-related reasons and its influence on users.
Method: A review of the literature was carried out on PubMed for the period of 2007 to 2017. Exclusion criteria for articles were non-reference to people, the use of a language other than English, letters to the publisher, articles referring to reviews rather than surveys, articles that did not refer to a population of young adults, did not refer to the effect of internet addiction and the finding that the content of the article did not ultimately concern this issue, as it emerged from reading the summary. Finally, the sample consisted of 14 studies.
Results: Data analysis has shown that internet use can have a negative impact on the mental health of users, with more frequent sleep disorders, suicidal behaviors, suicidal ideation, psychological discomfort, and addictive habits.
Conclusions: The internet seems to have a positive correlation with the factors studied in the above studies. It is perceived that the use of the internet is related to suicide, sleep disturbance, psychological discomfort, psychosis and mental health problems.
