Autism Spectrum Disorder and Victimization: Adolescent views with ASD and HFA on victimization and strategies to deal with it
Summary:
The present study aims to examine the existence, size and forms of victimization suffered by children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and students with High Functional Autism (HFA). The sample of this study consisted of 33 adolescents with ASD and 27 with HFA (50 boys and 10 girls) aged 12-18. Adolescents with HFA received additional educational support in the regular class or in a resource room, while students with ASD attended Special Education Schools. Each student completed two self-refferal questionnaires (Peer Victimization, and What I Would Do) to investigate the research objectives. According to the findings adolescents with ASD and HFA are victimized with higher rates being detected in adolescents with HFA. A statistically significant difference was found in forms of victimization. Adolescents with HFA reported 100% general form of bulling, 25.9% physical and indirect verbal, 70.4% direct verbal, and 11% grabbing/destroying things. In contrast, adolescents with ASD reported only experiences of general from victimization (30.3%) and direct verbal form (21.2%). Also, regarding victimization strategies, a positive correlation was found between "passive behavior" and "solving or attempting to resolve the problem", negative correlations between "passive behavior and" distancing / indifference / ignorance ", "retaliation" and" dissociation / indifference / ignorance, "retaliation" and "social support”. In addition, with regard to treatment strategies, girls show more passive behavior and seek more ways to resolve the problem than boys. Future research would be useful to investigate what factors differentiate the prevalence of victimization of adolescents with HFA compared to those with ASD in terms of type of school.
