Fifth grade student's informal proportional reasoning strategies.
Summary:
The multiplicative proportional reasoning constitutes the base and the capstone of mathematical thought. It constitutes the criterion of the quality of mathematical thought at the end of primary school and the touchstone for the gaining of new knowledge in the secondary education. The nature of analogical thinking is simple as it is based on simple multiplicative relationships and also complicated as the combination of these relationships requires logical operations in a second-order level, which Piaget has called as the formal operational stage. Like every mathematical concept, analogy, consists of three components: the intuitive, the algorithmic and the formal. The first is the basis for the latter two. The aim of the present study is to contribute to the investigation of the intuitive component of the concept in order to strengthen the level of its attainment by the students of the last two grades of elementary school. The outcomes showed that properly chosen problems can foreshadow the strategy used by the students in such problems and help the teacher organize his instruction by selecting problems that match his goal.In particular, a 15-task test (comprised of “missing value” problems) was given to 221 students of the fifth class of primary school. Student’s performance was mediocre. The students used 29 different solving strategies (13 right and 16 false strategies). Moreover, we undentified 4 levels of informal proportional reasoning in student’s answers.
